The National Research Council (CNR) is a public organization; its duty is to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge growth and of its applications for the scientific, technological, economic and social development of Italy.
To this end, the activities of the organization are divided into macro areas of interdisciplinary scientific and technological research, concerning several sectors: biotechnology, medicine, materials, environment and land, information and communications, advanced systems of production, judicial and socio-economic sciences, classical studies and arts. CNR is distributed all over Italy through a network of institutes aiming at promoting a wide diffusion of its competences throughout the national territory and at facilitating contacts and cooperation with local firms and organizations.
The Institute of Biomembranes and Bioenergetics (CNR-IBBE) hosts the Italian virtual bimolecular laboratory of the European research infrastructure on Biodiversity “LifeWatch” (MoBiLab) and leads the Italian node of ELIXIR. The CNR-IBBE team has a long-standing experience in molecular biology and bioinformatics approaches applied to several topics of basic and applied Life Sciences (identification of molecular biomarkers associated to physiological and pathological conditions, comparative and functional genome analysis, mitochondrial biogenesis and function, molecular phylogenetics and evolution). CNR-IBBE is fully equipped with all relevant instruments, facilities and expertise relevant for its research activities including Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and high-performance computing platforms for data storage and analysis. CNR-IBBE joins INDIGO in his role of coordinator of the Joint Research Unit denominated ELIXIR-Italy, which constitutes the Italian node of ELIXIR. ELIXIR is an intergovernmental organisation, which builds on existing data resources and services within Europe in order to develop and operate a European data infrastructure for bioinformatics.
Putting together the excellences of Italian bioinformatics ELIXIR-Italy provides to INDIGO a user community with a strong expertise in biomolecular data analysis and bioinformatics tools development. ELIXIR-Italy will participate in Tasks 2.2 “Defining support to Research Data” and 2.3 “Application Test and Validation” in Work Package 2, which main objectives are to guarantee a smooth and widespread usability of INDIGO and to ensure that all the middleware and other solutions developed in INDIGO are meeting the needs and requirements of the various user communities.
